After seven years on air, and working in three different stations, I've been exposed to different schools of thought when it comes to Radio. Most that I've come across promote creating a "DJ persona".
Just recently, I've been trying something different. I have been completely open and honest with my audience about my personal life. I've revealed intimate and sometimes embarrassing details. It's a good way to build an emotional link with listeners, and so far I think it has been working. At least, I hope it has.

Oops
Today (Monday) we didn't have a great show. There were some parts that were good with lots of listener contributions (like our segment "Simple things"), but overall it could have been a better.
Since the 12nn-3pm slot doesn't have many commercials, we (Louise and I) have been trying to achieve a good balance of talk and music.
Due to a couple of minor errors, we goofed up today and had a lot of talk at certain points. So, our boss said that we've been talking too much. Oh well, the only thing we can do is improve.

Alright
It's been more than a month now, and our new show (me and Louise on "The Midway Twist" 12nn-3pm) has been doing quite well. We're doing all of our planned segments and our audience seems to be responding. So, Jamaica and Gabriel have teamed up in the morning as well.
I'm also getting the hang of heading production at the station. Harry left some big shoes to fill, but things have been going more smoothly than I expected. Whew!

weekends
The other weekend was pretty bad for me. On top of the fact that I was sick, I had a flat tire in the rain.
This weekend was also a hectic one, but there were lots of silver linings. Not the least of which was The Bystanders recording a new version of the Jam 88.3 jingle for The Blend. What a great bunch of guys.

Perspective
I came to work on Monday to find that half of my work files were completely deleted from the DJ's computer. Of course, anyone who has lost any important file knows how much of a pain this is. Obviously, I was upset.
But later on I saw a news special on the people evacuating Lebanon because of the Crisis in the middle east. It was like a slap in the face by God. Here I was complaining about lost files, while other people are fighting to save their lives.

The up-side of being sick
Yesterday I lost my voice. I wasn't able to go on-air, even though I was working at the station. It was hoarse the other day, for a number of reasons, but yesterday it failed me.
This is one of the worst things that could happen to an announcer/voice talent/emcee. I was otherwise completely healthy, but I couldn't do a lot of my work.
My spirits were a bit low, until I got a call from a very sweet listener wishing that I would get better soon. She said that she misses my voice on air. That's one heck of a silver lining - realizing that someone actually appreciates your work that much. :)

Getting into our stride
This week is the second of our new show, so I guess the honeymoon stage should be ending pretty soon. We'll be launching some of our segments this week, which is pretty good timing I guess.
After listening to podcasts and airchecks of talk shows and semi-talk shows in the US, I think we've got a pretty good formula. Hopefully we can get a good balance of talk and music that the audience will appreciate.

The Blend Shangri-la pictures
I was finally able to upload the pictures from the Shangri-la installment of "The Blend" CD mall tour. The pictures are at this URL...
http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/rickrude883/slideshow?.dir=/7610scd&.src=ph
It's really cool that the mall has an express escalator, because I was able to take some helicopter-type shots during the show. :)

So far so good
Monday we launched Jam 88.3's first official DJ tandem. Louise and I have been on air together doing the 12-3pm slot.
Usually when listeners don't like something, they immediately give feedback. But so far we've only gotten positive reactions.
To say that I'm happy would be an understatement. The best part is the fact that we still have lots of plans for the show.

Residual high
The last installment of the mall tour yesterday, at Shangri-la Plaza, was fantastic! Probably the best one yet. Each group performed well and the crowd was big and so into a cappella music. The on-site sales of the CDs were also the most impressive so far.
Nobody left there dissappointed, especially me. Manny Pacquiao winning his fight didn't hurt my mood either. :)

The bright side
Last night, I went to bed feeling bad because Andre Agassi was eliminated from his last Wimbledon. I know that a fairy tale ending was unlikely (considering his injuries) but I was still hoping. I guess it could be worse. At least he lost to Nadal, a top player who is on a roll, instead of some qualifier.
Well, today is another installment of The Blend Mall tour. Listening to the a cappella from our compilation CD will make me feel a lot better. I'm sure the crowd at Shangri La later this afternoon will be as great as the ones in our previous installments.

Can't argue with the data
Many people think that TV has more viewers than radio has listeners. Well these numbers don’t lie...
In recent ratings polls of talk shows, David Letterman had 3.52 million viewers while Jay Leno had 4.96 million. But Radio talk show host Howard Stern, when he was still syndicated on terrestrial radio had as many as 18 million listeners. Today, Stern has as many as 3.5 to 4 million listeners on subscription-based Satellite Radio.
Radio is an extremely powerful medium. People just don't realize it.

Posers
Earlier today I decided to take a listen to another radio station, just to see what the competition was doing. I heard the hosts holding a trivia contest where they weren't even sure about the answers. Sheesh!
This is exactly why Jam 88.3 is better than those fools. We try as much as possible to be informative - or at the very least - make sense whenever we go on air. Some people may initally be attracted to the glamour of stations like that one, but they'll eventually come home to us.

The power of Radio
Yesterday I heard some sensless person talking about why they don't believe in Radio. How ridiculous!
Radio is the only medium that people can enjoy while doing things like jogging, studing, working, cleaning, cooking and driving. (You can't really watch TV or read the newspaper while doing those.)
In terms of advertising, Radio is number 1 during everyone's daily communte to and from work. Plus, for listeners, Radio is not nearly as cluttered with commercials the way TV is. Sure, people turn to their IPods and mp3 players, but they still listen to Radio to find about good music.
Radio is here to stay. Anyone who says otherwise is out of their mind.

Kaleidoscope World and Francis M
I just saw the video for "Kaleidoscope World" the other day . It's great! I can't wait to see it on tv.
Francis M makes an appearance. He even mentions it on his blog. Check it out....
http://francismagalona.multiply.com/journal/item/102
"Kaleidoscope" was my choice for the "The Blend" CD. Watching the video I thought about how far this project has come, beggining as a mere thought in my mind a year ago. Until now, it's still overwhelming. Hopefully, the best is yet to come.

Over the weekend, I tried to do something different with my radio show "The Blend". It's Independence weekend, so Sat and Sun I played a bunch of selected Filipino a cappella songs. Some were pretty old-school. I hope people liked it.

"The circle is now complete..." - Darth Vader
For the past week, I've been training Gabs for a possible position as DJ at Jam. He's been my partner/sidekick on air. This is actually the first time I've every trained someone. It seems like just yesterday that I was the inexperienced sidekick. :)

Gary V!
I must've met him at least three times and watched him perform live several times, but each time I'm still starstruck. In my line of work I meet more than my share of celebrities, but there's something different about this guy. Maybe it's not just the fact that he's a big star, but that he also has an aura that lets you know that he's a genuinely nice person in spite of his fame.
Yesterday he passed by the station to promote his new CD. Even though I had to go poo (I hate doing it at the office), I waited for him to arrive. The autograph and photo with him were well worth it. Too bad I didn't find out early enough to bring my CDs. I probably would've even gotten my old cassette tapes signed! I remember myself, as a kid, practicing singing to a minus-one tape of "Faces of Love". Today, I'm still a huge fan.

Rolling
I've really had my hands full these past couple of weeks and yet I'm still going strong. Hehehe..
Early Thursday I did "Breakfast Break" in Alabang, yesterday (Friday) I had late-night racket/gig over in Greenhills, and this afternoon was another great stop for The Blend mall tour at Glorietta. (Louise is a life saver by the way, for covering for me at Live Sound's performance on The Blend radio show.) Then tomorrow, we'll be over at Robinsons Ermita for yet another gig.
All these hostings are quite tiring. But I think I haven't gotten sick because I love my job so much. :)

Whew!
I'm still a bit tired from the weekend. After doing the entire voiceover for the Jam Musicfest last Friday (where the Bystanders and The AKAFellas did great), I also went to Sta.Rosa Saturday to host another show for The Blend CD mall tour and on Sunday I did the same at Alabang Town Center.
I was also just named the interim Head of Production at Jam, so I've been spending a lot more time at the office. I thought I would be able to get some rest today (because I was on leave) but I still had to come in to do a little of production work, and my leave wasn't for vacation, so I didn't get much of a breather.
I'm not complaining. I'd rather be busy than bored. It's a good kind of tired actually. I just hope I don't get sick or anything.

Eventful weekend
(I was about to say "hectic weekend" but I love my job too much, so the stress isn't that bad.)
This afternoon, it's blocked screening of "Over The Hedge" in Galleria. Looks like a good movie.
Then tonight, we've got our Jam 88.3 Musicfest at the Greenhills G-Strip. Over 30 bands, plus it's free. It's gonna be awesome.
Saturday afternoon, it's the next leg of The Blend Mall tour at SM Santa Rosa. The AKAFellas, Kilyawan and Bystanders will rock Laguna with great music without instruments starting at 4:30pm.
Finally on Sunday, another installment of The Blend Mall tour at Alabang Town Center. I can't get enough of Jam-cappella!

Thoughts on The Davinci Code controversy
I disagree with boycotting the movie. I believe the key to disputing the claims of The Davinci Code is knowledge. We, as Christians, should read the book and watch the movie, in order to fully understand what they allege. It is our responsibility to then study relevant literature to accurately dispute the claims of the novel and the movie.
It is naive to believe that the ideas that The Davinci Code brings up will merely dissapear by simply boycotting it. But they will when acurately disputed, with facts. There are a number of books and videos for sale that dispute the claims of Dan Brown's work. We should read and watch these.
Knowledge is power. If we are armed all the facts, when someone comes up to us with The Davinci Code theory, we, as intelligent informed Christians, can effectively disprove them. Informed faith is much stronger than blind faith.

Shame on me
Over the weekend I was extremey peeved by the fact that I couldn't play tennis due to the poor weather. I complained that my new exercise routine was disrupted.
But when I saw the newspaper this morning, I was silenced. I saw the devastation that the storm caused. Here I was whining that I couldn't play tennis, while some people had lost so much more.

Loving tennis again
I'm a member of the Andre Agassi tennis generation. I've been a fan since I was a little kid, and he was the young exciting player with long hair and acid-washed jean shorts. Today he's the older refined bald edlerstatesman of the sport. And even though his career is winding down, I'm as much of a fan as ever.
I've recently gotten back into tennis. Over the past few months, I've been playing once a week. But this week I've stepped it up, playing four times in the past five days. Hopefully it will help me get back to my ideal weight. Even if it takes long to trim down, at least I get to pretend I'm Agassi on the court again.

Movie therapy
I has been a while since I've seen a good blockbuster movie. Last week Wednesday we had the block screening of Mission: Impossible 3. It was exactly what I needed. Probably the best of the three. Next on the list is X-men 3. I'm sure that one is worth the wait as well.

More happenings
I'm rather excited about the next few days. Aside from the fact that the weekend is coming, I have The Bystanders LIVE on "The Blend" tomorrow (Saturday, APril 29) at 4pm for one whole hour of a cappella jammin'! I can also listen to the replay on Sunday.
If that weren't enough, Monday (May 1) is the first leg of our mall tour to promote our a cappella compilation cd "The Blend: a Jam-cappella album"! It'll be The AKAFellas and Kilyawan LIVE at 4:30pm at The Podium.

The Geek in me
Last week Myx interviewed about how I'm a "budget techie". The feature aired on their channel just yesterday. I know I don't have the best gear in the world, but I definitely have more than my money's worth. I hope I got that point across well. Maybe I even informed some people out there on tight budgets that you don't need to be made out of cash to own some cool gadgets.

Yesterday, the MYX Live performances of the artists featured on our CD The Blend were replayed. It was such a pleasant surprise getting texts from people saying how great the performances are. It's wonderful to see all our hard work get some results.

I'm so excited to see the performances artists from The Blend cd on MYX Live Wed at 9pm. I really can't wait to see contemporary a cappella on TV. I'm sure the groups (The AKAFellas, The Bystanders, Kilyawan and Live Sound) all did a great job.

The Blend on TV
Some would say that I should have expected these things, but still I can't help but be surprised and thankful.
TV commercial for our compilation CD "The Blend: a Jam-cappella album" has been airing on Studio 23. (I don't know if it is still running, but if anyone sees it, please let
me know.)
Last March 28 some of the groups that appear on the CD shot live peformances for Myx. I can't wait to see the performances of The AKAFellas and the other groups to air on the channel. :)

The AKAFellas' "One In Me" is on it's 2nd week at number 1 on the Jam 88.3 countdown "On The Charts". People tell me I shouldn't be surprised, but I can't help but to be so excited.
This accomplishment, coupled with the run of "This Guy's In Love With You Pare" by Kilyawan (also hitting number 1), are major victories for the genre of a cappella music here in the Philippines.
Jam's countdown is based on requests and votes, so I'm so thankful to all those who've been supporting the show, the album and the genre in general.

Amazing
Last Saturday The AKAFellas performed live on "The Blend", my a cappella radio show . As usual, their performance was awesome (even though they lacked two members). The response, thru text, chat and shoutbox, was more than I expected. Not to mention the loyal Jam listeners who visited the station. I hope the exposure helps to boost awareness of our compilation CD and the genre of contemporary a cappella in general.

Sick DJ
It's tough skipping boardwork due to sickness. Aside from not feeling well and missing going on air, I also have the guilt of other DJs doing extra hours to fill in for my absence.
At least I haveto look forward to the AKAFellas performing live on The Blend this Saturday, plus their performance at the next leg of "U GOT JAM" over at Joseph & Mary Academy in San Pedro, Laguna on the 30th.

I just started up a Yahoo group for The Blend (groups.yahoo.com/groups/theblend). I think this is cool way for people in the a cappella community to keep in touch. Plus, it's a great way to spread the word to people who are new to the genre.

Last week was an eventful one for The Blend. Wednesday was the press launch of The Blend CD. It went great. I hope the event will create enough buzz for more people to hear about the album.
Saturday we had Kilyawan, the boys who sang "This Guy's In Love With You Pare", live on the show. The response was more than I had expected. I plan to have live groups on the program every last Saturday of the month.

Commencement
The press launch of The Blend CD last night was awesome! As I watched to the groups perform the songs from the album, I couldn't help but be a little emotional. After all the work and obstacles, my vision is finally a reality.
The ultimate satisfaction was getting feedback this morning from listeners who attended. Hearing how much they like the project makes it all worth while.
Now, I just hope that sales of the CD do well enough that we can come out with a follow-up later this year or early 2007.

Last week I heard that some other stations do not want to play songs from our latest cd. Why would they not want to play good music by Filipino groups? Beats me. Maybe they're just threatened by our pioneering efforts.
You know, at first I felt bad about it. But then I realized that it's their loss not ours. :) Filipinos love a cappella music. That's why we get lots of requests for songs from the cd.

Just the other day we got back from our company outing in Boracay. Needless to say it was great. The sun, the beach, the sand and good company of friends. YOu can't ask for much more than that for a vacation.

Pirated!
The other day a friend told me that "The Blend" CD that I produced was bootlegged. Now I know how it feels. After everything I went thru to get the album out, all the obstacles I faced, someone does this. It's like they belittled all our hard work.
I can only hope that only the much poorer people buy the units available at those shady places, while those who can afford to save up for the original actually do that.
I guess my only consolation is that I have the bragging rights to say that my CD was popular enough to be pirated. But it still doesn't make me feel much better.

Climbing mountains
Since the birth of contemporary a cappella, the genre has faced an uphill battle breaking into mainstream pop culture. My experience has been no diffrent. I have encountered many obstacles since the debut of my show "The Blend" last year.
But i'm proud to say that the newly-released compilation album is doing well in stores (with little promotion), the music has been incorporated into Jam 88.3's regular weekly playlist, The Blend program will soon celebrate its first anniversary, and next month we will finally formally launch the CD. Not bad at all, wouldn't you say?
I know there are more mountains ahead, but looking back at the ones already climbed just gives me more strength to push on.

The first sales figures of our compilation cd "The Blend" came in a few days ago, and we couldn't be happier. It's amazing that we were able to move that many units considering that we were not yet promoting the album during that period. I guess there are just a lot of fans of contemporay a cappella music out there. :)

And by just watching the very first episode of that tv series, I was suddenly brought back to 1988 and how different life was then; how much simpler everything was. (I was the same age as the characters.) Of course, this doesn't really help my Just-turned-30 crisis. Neither does meeting an old friend yesterday that I hadn't seen in years, and probably won't see for years. Sigh...

Maniacs on the road
Earlier today I got involved in a traffic altercation with the driver of a bus. The guy was swerving around acting like he owned the road, and when he finds me in his way, he intentionally tries to hit me. The jerk. On top of that, he throws something (a small rock i guess) at my car. I almost got down to confront him, but I realized that he and the conducter outnumbered me. Sometimes ignorance like that really gets to me.
Btw, I tried to call that LTFRB hotline, to report the guy. It was useless. No answer.

The list of this year's nominations for the KBP awards was released today. I've got high hopes. Jam is in the running (best FM station), as is my commercial for Flick of the Week, which aired until mid this year, was nominated. Last year, my commercial for Info Jam won. It would really be something else if my work won again this year.

Blessings
Yesterday I attended the media launch of McDonald's new ad campaign featuring Kitchie Nadal. While she was performing some songs, I noticed people gathering outside taking pictures thru the window. I see and talk to artists like Kitchie all the time, so i take it for granted. But for so many other people, just seeing something like that thru a window is a treat. It reminded me of how lucky I am, in spite of the fact that my life is not perfect, and how I should see the glass half-full more often.

Badass Madapaka
It's been a busy couple of weeks, but the highlight of last week was watching Rex Navarrete live. That guy is hilarious. I was even able to interview him. The thing i love about him is how he became famous internationally embracing his Filipino heritage and not ignoring it like other celebrities. What a guy.

Thinking about The Blend CD
I can't seem to sleep. It's past midnight and I'll be up early tomorrow. I guess I'm just so excited about the CD of my show The Blend. The initial layout for the cover design is almost done and the groups will start recording this week. I can't wait until we release it!

Nick
Last night one of my dreams came true: I recorded voice-overs for Nickelodeon shows. Gosh! I remember watching the channel as a kid.
I've been doing voice-overs for Radio and TV commercials for a few years now, but yesterday the whole thing felt as exciting as if it were my first time. :)

U Got Jam - The Blend
U Got Jam - The Blend was a blast last Friday over at Colegio San Agustin Binan. The crowd loved the one-two-punch of Rock and A Cappella delivered by Mojofly and The AKAFellas.
For fans of The Blend, I've got big plans for the show. Sneak peek... we're working on an all-A Cappella CD. Shhh... :)

Gadgets
I'm not a writer, but I decided to finally try my hand at it. I did a review in the latest edition of Gadgets Magazine. It's the anniversary issue with Dennis Trillo on the cover. I felt as giddy as a schoolboy looking for the article. :)
