A Box of Chocolates

I just finalized the deal earlier today. I'll be working at a TV station here in Houston.

You know, when I decided to move to the US and gave up my position at Jam 88.3, I had it in my mind that I would be bidding goodbye to broadcasting. I was set on going back into Advertising, where I began my career.

Life though, has a funny way of turning out. Although I sent my resume to dozens of Ad Agencies, it seems that broadcasting is where I'm mean to be. I gave my resume to only a few TV stations and even fewer Radio stations, and now I have a shot at jobs in both fields.

For TV, I'll be working as a Master Control Operator on the weekends. It's actually good since I'll still have time for another full-time job. If I'm lucky, I'll get the Office Manager position at the Radio station I was interviewed at.

Right now, I'm still sending out resumes. I still want to keep my options open. Only God knows where I'll end up.

First Anniversary (and counting)

I can't believe it. Exactly one year has passed since I had surgery on my lower spine (two slipped discs) It sort of set off a chain of major events that eventually lead to my resigning from Jam 88.3 and relocation to the US.

Life has been tough for the past year. Physically, I still can't run, jump or lift heavy objects. I hope that once I get medical insurance here, I'll be able to meet with a doctor about one day being able to play Tennis or Basketball again.

From Radio to TV?

I just came back from an interview at a TV station here in Houston. They need "Master Controller" to work full-time on the weekends. I was shown the work station and briefed on the job, and it's not too different from handling the console at a Radio station.

The Engineer in charge of the station seemed to like me, so I'll probably pursue the position while I wait for feedback from that Radio station that interviewed me the other week. (They'll hire mid-next month.) Who knows? If everything goes well, I might be able to hold down both jobs.

The return of "DJ Rick"?

Am I returning to radio? Maybe, but if ever, it won't exactly be a come-back. I was recently interviewed by a radio station here in Houston to be their Office Manager. The station broadcasts block-timers / off-site programs, so there's no chance at all that I'll go on air.

When I decided to move here, I've been planning a career shift. After nine years in radio, I wanted to try new things. This could be a great stepping-stone to exploring opportunities in other fields.

It looks like I have a good chance of getting the job, but the position might not be open until July or even August. I'm not sure if I can wait that long. If I really can't, I might have to settle for a less desirable opening. But then again, it's a recession here in the U.S. and finding work is proving to be difficult.
