Why Talk? Well, it could save FM

When we were still stumbling to get our new show "Nightlife: the Rick and Patti show" off the ground (see previous blogs), a couple of listeners said that they didn't like the new semi-Talk show format. Thankfully, the second day and the rest of the week, we got into a groove and we haven't heard anything like that since.

I know that the Talk-show format on FM is not as huge as it is in the U.S., but here in the Philippines, it has the potential to be. We Pinoys can easily accept Talk Radio because we love personalities. Just think of the national obsession with celebrities and their exploits.

More importantly, the Talk format could save the FM Radio from the huge threat of file sharing and music piracy. Music-intensive stations are struggling because listeners can easily download their entire playlist off the internet, or even buy it on pirated mp3 CDs.

To combat this, FM has to offer something different, something that people cannot get just anywhere. The answer; captivating on-air personalities and/or interesting discussions. Humans relate to other humans, not to "faceless" announcers. I'm not saying that we should get rid of the music altogether, but perhaps a shift in focus could be the fresh air that breathes life back into FM Radio.

Talk radio definitely works but it depends on what the topics are, how knowledgeable the talkers are the rapport between them. I've heard many, many talk shows that are either incredibly dull and boring, or totally trying hard to be American (I don't know why some DJs feel like they have to sound live bloody Valley Girls!).

Thankfully, you and Patti are not like that at all! I enjoy listening to you guys - you make my work day pass quickly!

All the best!

I know what you mean about the "Valley Girls". Sheesh! These people give DJs a bad name. The thing is, the accent is all they have going for them. If you take that away, there's not much else. I wrote a blog before about the state of Phil Radio. Check it out here...

Btw, thanks for the kind words. We try to put both entertainment and substance into our show. There's more planned for the program, so please keep listening. :)

RiCk!!!

This new segment I gotta check out...I'm so not on the radio during the time segment. I'll have a look one of these days while I'm in Manila for an unexpected family matter. :)

Love problem queries...maybe have some love expert or a "dear abby" writer be in the wings or partner up on certain days in the month. I know I used to be one of those late student listeners before at an old radio station back in YVR - Sex, Lives & Audio Tape. It helped a lot of listeners with questions they don't know where to get answers to their question. Asking their parents was out of the question and definitely taboo. I would super duper listen to that since there is a lot of learning for a lot of people ... it's not embarrassing to ask these things...especially when it involve their lives and their health. :)

See you Rick!

Well, we did try giving love advice once on air and the audience did not like it. We had lots of negative feedback. It could be that our core market might think that that kind of thing is "corny". I'm not sure.

Maybe well try it again sometime later in the figure. Probably when the show is all ironed out and everything is in place.

i guess listener first...listerners in the US is quite different from Philippines so can't really apply those things but with the popularity of reality shows and "open problems" - it would change what society sees. it's something important that a lot might face but don't have an outlet to find out ... maybe internet but different also. :P
