Don't underestimate the Fab Four

Last weekend I had part 2 of "The Blend Beatles Special". Originally I was afraid that it wouldn't be as good as the first installment (Oct 28-29), but I got lots of good feedback.

Tomorrow evening, we're holding the launch of the new Beatles CD "Love" at the Hard Rock.  At first I thought it was just a collection of remastered songs, but then I found out that songs were remixed and even combined.

So now, I'm not just excited to hear The Bloomfields and Orange & Lemons, but I'm also looking forward to hearing the music of the Beatles in a new light.

"Pinoy Howard Stern"?

I've been a fan of talk radio for a long time. I've listened to lots of shows in the US and here in the Phils. It's quite interesting how the different markets/cultures spawn various styles of programs.

Lately, I've heard a certain DJ here being called the "Filipino Howard Stern". I think it's ridiculous. Anybody who's really heard both shows knows that there are a ton of differences. (I can give you a whole list.) But the biggest: Stern's show became famous by pushing Federal restrictions and the freedom of speech envelope, this local program creates hype using gossip and celebrity intrigue.

Don't get me wrong. I think the Pinoy show is pretty entertaining. It could actually do quite well here in the Philippines. But is it in any way similar to Stern? Not by a long shot.

Cool runnings

So far this week is looking pretty good. Sunday started out with Pacquiao beating Morales. Monday, we (my partner Louise & I) began our "Midway Lunchout" promo, and it has caught on pretty well. We're also in our 2nd week of promoting the Feeling Famous contest.

Looking forward to the end of the week, I'm rather excited about getting "retro". This weekend I'll have the much-requested Part II of "The Blend Beatles Special". This is in-line with our launch of the new Beatles CD next week - something I'm also excited about.

Promo envy

As a DJ, I get to see lots and lots of listeners win cool contests. With many of the more-common prizes - like movie screenings - we are usually given some for ourselves.

Every so often, big contests come along that just make us so envious of our listeners. Why? Well, because we're not allowed to join and win. Our listeners get a small chance of winning, while we get absolutely none at all.

Our latest big promo, "Feelin' Famous", is one that I really really wouldn't mind winning. With all the prizes, it's like winning several contests in one. How lucky our listeners are.

Hurts so good

The other day some relatives sent a box of goodies from the States. It just reminded me of one reason why I'm not in a rush to go there: the food is too darn good!

After stuffing myself with Reese's, Chex Mix, Pop Tarts and other "snacks" I knew it would just add to the size of my belly. So several times, I had to drop and do a bunch of push-ups trying to make up for all the calories I ingested.

I know that I have to keep it up for a long time to make any difference. Hey, maybe this is what I needed to get back into the excersize habit.

What a loss

A month or so ago Robi of the AKAFellas resigned as a DJ at our sister station. Until now, I still feel bad about it. It's not just because he's a buddy that I would chat with around work (our office units are inter-connected), but because the guy really has something to offer the Radio industry.

Robi and I would talk about our theories on Radio and our plans for our shows. He genuinely wanted to add to the art of Deejaying. I would guess that to some listeners, he's just another jock that dissappeared from the airwaves. For me, Philippine Radio took a big blow.

Back to normal (whatever that is)

To say I'm relieved that my ex is back out of the country, would be an understatement. She left over the weekend and our daughter is back with me and my wife.

One silver lining about the whole thing though, is that we were forced to look ahead and plan well into the future. That'll really give you perspective.

But for the moment, I'm just thinking about right now. I've been so glad we can get back to our lives, that I've been getting too excited about some really petty things, like my fantasy basketball team.
