How to find the title of a song you've heard on-air

"What's the title of the song that goes...?"

Never a day goes by that I do not hear that from a listener. I know. I know. As a DJ, people expect us to know these things. But we too are human. There's a limit to the amount of lyrics that we can memorize. So please forgive us if we do not know the answer.

Believe it or not, the question usually irritates DJs (even if we don't show it). Why? Well, it's actually so easy to find the answers. But in this fast-food world we live in, we all want the easy way out.

Now, for those of you who are willing to do a tiny bit of work for yourselves, here's what to do...

Go to Google.com or Yahoo.com.
Then, type the following three things as your search...
lyrics "(the lyrics that you know)" (the artist's name, if you know it)

Take note of the quotation marks. Those are important. But watch out for things that can be spelled differently (like "going to" or "gonna", "i am" or "i'm", "we are" or "we're" etc.). You can also put the artist before the lyrics for different results.

Next, right-click the resulting links and open in different tabs/windows. One of these will likely give you the answer you're looking for. That's it. It's that easy. Gosh, I really hope this blog helps someone.

Progress

Just the other day I weighed and measured myself again for and update on "The DJ Rick Weight-loss Challenge".  I'm glad to say that I lost 3 pounds in a week.  I don't want to let the cat out of the bag, but I think I've lost a little more since then.

I'd like to give more updates online, but I don't think I can do it regularly.  I'll just do it more often on-air so it'll be easier for people to catch.

My new toy

I'm a budget techie.  I was actually featured on Myx because of some of my value-for-money gadgets.  Well, I've added another one.  The Creative Zen V Plus Mp3 player.  Check it out here...

http://www.creative.com/products/mp3/zenv/

All the reviews I've read online say it's better than the iPod Nano.  After trying it, I'm more than satisfied.  I've tried iPods and I like the features of this one better than the Nano (it even plays videos).  I highly recommend it to anyone.

Btw, I had a relative buy it for me in the States for P8000, when it goes for P12,000 here!  It's made in China, so it could be even cheaper in Hong Kong.

Crab mentality

Our station has made many efforts to help push new artists and lesser-known genres of music.  This is obvious in the many CD tie-ups we've had; which recently include "Not Another Christmas 3" (indie), Chris Cayzer (debut), "Doobie Nights" (reggae), and "The Blend" (a cappella).

For a while now, i have heard of how some stations would refuse to play music from albums associated with us.  I really don't want to think that they have something against us helping local musicians?  So why whould they make the artists suffer?  We don't even earn anything from the sales.

Sigh... You try to do something good and others just keep pulling you down

Fantasy? Not exactly

My NBA viewing experience this year has been ruined.  A buddy of mine convinced me to join a fantasy basketball league a few months ago, and ever since things have been difficult (to say the least).

I no longer cheer for my favorite teams and players.  Since I need good stats from the players on my team, I end up cheering for individual players.  I'd be shouting things like "one more block man!" or "gimme another steal!" or "why'd you take that shot? it's ruining your percentage!".

Sigh... I wish I could just forget about the league.  But I'm ranked near the top, I like the competition, and studying all the statistics satisfies the geek in me.  Oh well...

"The DJ Rick Weight-loss Challenge"

I've been consistently gaining weight over the years I've been with Jam 88.8, so I've drawn the line and have made a vow to slim down. To make sure that I stay on track, I'm enrolled in a program with Medislim.

Today, on our show, we launched it as our new on-air gimmick. Every so often I will weigh myself on air and give my tummy (belly and love handles) measurement & body mass index. I started by announcing my initial figures early in the program.

The response from the listeners was overwhelming. People were sending their words of support via text, chat, shoutbox and email. Some even gave some advice of their own. Others helped encourage me by giving their own weigh-loss accounts.

I've always wanted my show to be a positive force. Hopefully "The DJ Rick Weight-loss Challenge" will not only help me, but also inspire others to give importance to their health.

So that's where my line is

Sometimes when you're on-air talking candidly with a partner, you end up finding things out about yourself that you never realized before - stuff that you sort-of always knew, but never really thought about consciously.

Earlier today, Louise and I were discussing on "Conspiracy Theory" the possibility that most (and maybe all) celebrity relationships and weddings are just for the media.  One of us then threw out the idea of maybe faking a love team to boost our show's popularity.  I said that I'd never lie to the public that way.  I've gotten a couple of offers from showbiz people, but that there is one of the major reasons why I never said "yes".  How could I ever work the "chismis" factory that way and look myself in the mirror?

out

the last time i was on-air live was tuesday. wednesday i went with balikbayan relatives out of town the whole day. thursday i hosted a wedding reception in the rain. naturally, i was too sick and exhausted friday to come in for work.

sometimes you just can't avoid missing some shows. but i really don't like it. there's always that fear of losing your listeners. there's a danger that the'll listen to another program and get used it to that while you're gone.

Underappreciated

As a member of the music industry, I have gotten to meet and work with many musicians.  There are a lot out there that have achieved so much more fame than they deserve.  More often than not, many are insufferable to top it off.  I'm not going to name any, but I'm sure we all can think of a few off the tops of our heads.

On the other side of that coin are those extremely gifted ones that have not yet received the recognition that they oh so justly deserve. Many of which are truly nice people at that. Among these are Luke Mejares and The AKAFellas, just to name a couple.

I've seen both perform recently.  Their level of talent is amazing.  It saddens me that they haven't gotten the kind of superstardom that's due them, while other music acts out there are getting rich and famous for reasons like having just the right look, singing the right remake, or closing the right tv endorsement deal.

Don't get me wrong, not all who reach that pinnacle of popularity are unworthy. But there are some.  Oh, why do I keep wishing for things to be fair?
